Data Science in Pharma: A Student Learning Path

Pharmaceutical data science begins before model building. You need to understand how observations were collected, what the columns mean and which question the analysis can answer. This learning path connects Python skills with biostatistics using small, fictional teaching datasets.

Define the observation and its units

Write down what one row represents: a measurement, a sample or a batch. Record units, collection times and any grouping. Repeated measurements from one sample are not automatically independent samples. A short data dictionary is often more useful than jumping straight into a prediction model.

Inspect and clean a table

Check numeric types, duplicate records and missing values. Do not silently replace every missing value with zero. In the example below, a missing mass is excluded from the mean and the number of recorded observations is displayed. In a real study, missingness needs investigation and a documented analysis plan.

import pandas as pd

data = pd.DataFrame({
    "batch": ["A", "A", "B", "B"],
    "mass_mg": [498, 502, 500, None],
})
summary = data.groupby("batch")["mass_mg"].agg(["count", "mean"])
print(summary)
# A: count 2, mean 500.0; B: count 1, mean 500.0

Look beyond the average

The two example groups have the same mean but different numbers of observations. Plot individual values and report the amount of data behind a summary. Learn variation, sampling and confidence intervals before interpreting hypothesis tests. A small p-value alone does not describe the size or practical importance of an effect.

Build a reproducible mini-project

Choose a fictional laboratory table, write a question, document each cleaning step and produce one clearly labelled graph. Finish with a short interpretation and limitations. Save the code and library versions with the data description so someone else can reproduce your analysis.

Move to machine learning when the question needs it

Not every problem needs AI. Descriptive statistics or a transparent rule may be sufficient. When prediction is appropriate, define the outcome, choose a baseline, keep test observations separate and evaluate errors in the context of the question. Continue with the AI guide for a worked precision-and-recall example.
